He’s one of just nine players to have won the prestigious award on multiple occasions since its inception in 1948.

Every player to win multiple FWA Footballer of the Year awards

Tom Finney – Preston North End (1953/54 and 1956/57)

Tom Finney became the first footballer to win the award twice, earning the first of his accolades in 1953/54. That season, Finney scored 14 goals in 32 games and helped England to British Home Championship success.

Finney claimed the award for a second time after scoring 28 goals in all competitions for Preston, who ended the campaign third in the top flight.

Danny Blanchflower – Tottenham Hotspur (1957/58 and 1960/61)

Danny Blanchflower is recognised as one of the finest footballers in Tottenham history and was twice named Footballer of the Year during his time in North London.

Blanchflower won the FWA award for the first time in 1958, before claiming a second accolade during an unforgettable 1960/61 season. He captained Spurs to a League and FA Cup double, as the North Londoners became the first team to win the double in the 20th century.

Stanley Matthews – Blackpool and Stoke City (1947/48 and 1962/63)

Stanley Matthews was the first-ever recipient of the FWA Footballer of the Year and the first player to win the prize for different clubs. His first prize came after helping Blackpool to the FA Cup final in 1947/48, before a second success with Stoke in 1963. That latter triumph came with Matthews still playing top-flight football at the age of 48.

Kenny Dalglish – Liverpool (1978/79 and 1982/83)

After Kevin Keegan’s exit for Hamburg, Liverpool broke the British transfer record to sign Kenny Dalglish as his replacement. It was an investment that paid off, as Dalglish won the European Cup and FWA Footballer of the Year in his first season.

Dalglish won his second FWA award in 1982/83, after scoring 20 goals in Liverpool’s league title and League Cup double season. That year, Scot was named as runner-up to Michael Platini for the Ballon d’Or.

John Barnes – Liverpool (1987/88 and 1989/90)

Liverpool became the first club to have two multiple winners of the award, as John Barnes claimed the prize in 1988 and 1990. The winger was instrumental to title successes for the Reds, forming a devastating understanding with Peter Beardsley and John Aldridge in the first triumph.

In 1989/90, he scored a career-best 28 goals in all competitions.

Gary Lineker – Everton and Tottenham Hotspur (1985/86 and 1991/92)

Gary Lineker won his first FWA Footballer of the Year award during a sensational single-season spell at Everton. After arriving from Leicester, Lineker struck 40 goals in 57 games for the Toffees. He won the 1986 World Cup Golden Boot that summer to earn a move to Barcelona, before returning to English football at Spurs in 1990.

His final season in English football saw Lineker score 35 goals to win the FWA Footballer of the Year award for a second time.

Thierry Henry – Arsenal (2002/03, 2003/04 and 2005/06)

Thierry Henry holds the joint record for FWA Footballer of the Year awards, having claimed the prize three times in four seasons during the mid-noughties. Henry was a class above in that period, winning a record four Premier League Golden Boots at Arsenal.

His first accolade came in 2002/03, after breaking the Premier League assist record (20) and becoming the first footballer to score 20+ goals and record 20+ assists in one of Europe’s top five leagues this century.

The following season, he scored 30 league goals, as Arsenal made history by winning the Premier League without losing a game. Henry added a third award in 2005/06, after again leading the division for goals scored.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Manchester United (2006/07 and 2007/08)

Cristiano Ronaldo’s evolution from talented but frustrating talent into world-class star was completed after back-to-back FWA Footballer of the Year awards in 2006/07 and 2007/08.

The first of those seasons saw Ronaldo become the first – and so far only – player to win all six major individual footballer of the year awards in a Premier League season.

In addition to the FWA Footballer of the Year award, Ronaldo claimed the PFA Player’s Player of the Year, PFA Young Player of the Year, PFA Fans’ Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season, and inclusion in the PFA Team of the Season.

Incredibly, his performances got even better in 2007/08. Ronaldo scored 42 goals to inspire Manchester United to Premier League and Champions League success, earning his first Ballon d’Or in the process.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (2017/18, 2021/22 and 2024/25)

Mohamed Salah has matched Thierry Henry’s record of three FWA Footballer of the Year awards.

Salah’s first accolade came in his debut season at Liverpool, as the Egyptian scored a then-record 32 goals in a Premier League season. He was voted the league’s finest again in 2021/22, after leading the division for both goals and assists.

This season, he’s added a third award, after scoring 28 goals and creating 18 more in the Premier League to lead Liverpool to title success.
